Bio: I am a podcaster for the show FSH Society Radio. What is the FSH Society you ask? The FSH Society is the world’s largest grassroots network of patients, families, clinicians, researchers and friends advocating for FSH muscular dystrophy. This is a cause that means a lot to me because I have FSH muscular dystrophy. Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy is a heritable muscle disease, often called FSH or FSHD. Progressive weakening and loss of skeletal muscle are its major effects. It has significant medical and health impacts on individuals, families, and society. FSHD is among the most common forms of muscular dystrophy, affecting children and adults of both sexes. The cardinal feature of FSHD is the progressive loss of muscle strength. The disease’s name comes from the typical pattern of weakness at onset: the face (facio), shoulder girdle (scapulo), and upper arms (humeral).
I was diagnosed a year ago but I always new that there was something wrong. When I was younger I could do the push-ups like other kids. I had less strength. As I got older I had mobility issues with my arms. I thought that is just how I am. I always compensated. Until I couldn’t. I noticed pain when I played catch with my sons and thought there is something going on. Three doctors later I had my answer.
FSHD has no cure, no treatment. It is life shortening. It will effect me more and more. I decided that even before I was diagnosed I would do something to join the fight. So when the answer to what I had was FSH I joined the FSH Society and pitched the idea to there board to create a podcast. So that is my mission now to advocate and educate. I hope I can share this story on your show.
